Sambucol Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry

WINTER IS COMING FOLKS! That means flu and cold season is here!

Trust me when I say, this is an important syrup to have in your household.  Especially if you have kids.  The reason why this works so powerfully is thanks to the elderberry (high in nutrition, antioxidants, and more), along with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory/antiviral/antibacterial nutrition packed awesomeness of cloves, and the well known powerful RAW honey.  There is also ginger and cinnamon to thank for so many reasons….basically each ingredient in here mixed together is a powerhouse of added benefits for your immune system.

This was something I grew up on.  My dad gave this to us when we were very sick with the flu.  He said it worked wonders for the flu, but not as great for the common cold.  I cannot tell you how many times drinking my dads homemade elderberry syrup would make my 103 disappear the next day!  This experience has not just happened to me, as I convinced a few of my sick and skeptical friends try sambucol from the store a few years ago (you can pick it up in places like Walmart or Rite-Aid, etc), and they too had the same testimony!   That really sold it for me:)

Today I am going to show you how to save money and make your OWN elderberry syrup instead of paying more for less at the store.  This also ensures that you know every ingredient that you are putting in, so you can avoid unhealthy preservatives.

The web address says ninasveganrecipes.wordpress.com, yet this recipe has honey….I’ve been having a hard time finding an elderly syrup recipe that does NOT call for honey. Is it a must-have or is there a substitute?

Allison,
Thanks for your comment! I’m sorry your right, honey is not technically vegan huh? I guess I’m not 100% vegan then, so consider honey as an optional ingredient for my recipes.
To my understanding, the honey is not necessary, it just sweetens things up so it’s not as bitter and strong tasting. Honey also adds antibacterial properties to it. I you can try the recipe without the honey. Perhaps try Maple Syrup in place? Maple Syrup is loaded with nutrients too if you are ok with the sugar and want to add it:)
